Matt Luna is a communication and outreach/partnerships specialist in the sectors of environment, water resources, development, and climate cooperation.
He has been active in GMACCC since 2013 on behalf of the Institute for Environmental Security (IES) and as a regular member of the IES / GMACCC delegations to the UNFCCC COPs.
Matt is also the Organizer / Founder of The Hague Roundtable on Climate & Security which he initiated in April 2015.
Matt is based in The Netherlands and since November 2022 is a Senior Advisor, Climate and Security at Fanack Water / Fanack | The Chronicle of the Middle East & North Africa - an independent media and outreach organisation which aims to provide non-partisan facts and analysis of the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) through its websites.
From June 2016 through Oct 2020 he was Project Communication Manager at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and later completed the Advanced Water Leadership, Blue Innovation Track for Advanced Water Leaders programme at the H2O People Organization (Sep 2023 - Feb 2024). Matt has also led media outreach and fundraising for the creation and launch of the SunGlacier atmospheric water generation project.
Previously he served as an Election Observer, Mission Outreach and Management with Gender Concerns International where he conducted and reported on election observations with civil society organizations in Morocco, Myanmar and Tunisia for women's participation in democratic processes (Jun 2013 - Aug 2016). During this time, he also supported IES communication and partnerships in the EFFACE EU-funded environmental crime project.
Before coming to the Netherlands in 2010, Matt worked as a journalist with the International New York Times (Herald Tribune) in Paris, France, from 2002 – 2009.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts, Sociology and English Literature at the University of North Florida and served as a Communications Specialist in the United States Marine Corps (1988 – 1992).
